Welcome to the AWS Migration Services lesson. Moving an entire corporate data center to the cloud is a monumental task. AWS provides managed services to automate the discovery and migration of your servers and databases.
Why Learn AWS Migration Services?
You cannot effectively plan a cloud migration if you don't know exactly what servers your company currently owns. Learning about AWS Discovery and Migration tools allows you to perform seamless "lift-and-shift" operations without disrupting the business.
Tutorial Overview
In this tutorial, you will learn about:
- AWS Application Discovery Service
- AWS Application Migration Service (MGN)
Discovering and Migrating Workloads
- AWS Application Discovery Service: Before you move, you must map your current infrastructure. This service helps enterprise customers plan migration projects by gathering information about their on-premises data centers, recording server specifications, performance data, and network dependencies.
- AWS Application Migration Service (MGN): This is the primary AWS service recommended for "lift-and-shift" (rehosting) migrations. It continuously replicates your on-premises servers (including the operating system, applications, and databases) into AWS without causing any downtime. When you are ready, you press a button, and it launches matching EC2 instances in your VPC.
*(Note: If you only need to move a database, and not the underlying server, you would use the previously discussed AWS Database Migration Service (DMS)).*
